Gilas Pilipinas Men (2-1) used a balanced attack to beat the Senegal (2-1) in their rematch, 75-63 in the 2023 Heyuan WUS International Basketball Tournament on Sunday, August 6, at the Heyuan Sport Gymnasium in Guangdong, China. [VIDEO]
After their 72-64 defeat on August 4 against the world no. 37 Senegal, the world no. 40 Gilas Pilipinas team exacted their revenge in the rematch with the Lions.
CJ Perez top-scored for Gilas with 14 points, while AJ Edu had another solid performance of 13 points and 7 rebounds. Dwight Ramos finished with 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 assists.
Down by 6 at the end of the third quarter, Gilas had a solid fourth-quarter run, outscoring the Lions 28-10, with Ray Parks Jr. igniting the rally by contributing all of his 8 points in the final quarter, and they fended off Senegal's late comeback.
Senegal did not qualify for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup but are preparing for the FIBA Pre-Olympic Qualifying Tournament-Africa.
The Chot Reyes-mentored Gilas will play their final tuneup game in China tomorrow, August 7, once again against Iran B at 8:00pm.
