Gilas Pilipinas Men escaped past the Korean Basketball League's Changwon LG Sakers, 86-81 in their first and last tune-up game before departing for Hangzhou, China for the 2023 Asian Games on Friday, September 22 at the PhilSports Arena. [VIDEO]
Justin Brownlee led Gilas with a game-high 19 points on 7-of-20 shooting from the field, including 2-of-5 from beyond the arc and 3-of-5 from the free-throw line along with 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal and a block in 35 minutes of play. June Mar Fajardo had a solid 16 points (5/7fg, 6/6ft), 1 rebound and 3 assists while Calvin Oftana with a double-double performance of 13 points (5/7fg, 1/1 3pts) to go along with 11 rebounds, and 2 assists.
Former NBA player Dante Cunningham led the Sakers in a losing effort, scoring 18 points (6/9fg, 2/2 3pt, 4/4ft) and contributing 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, and a block. Another LG import, Egypt's Assem Marei, added 13 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.
Gilas Pilipinas (World No. 38, Asia No. 8) will be back in action in the 16-team men's 5x5 basketball event of the 19th edition of the Asian Games. The Philippines is in Group C and will play Bahrain on September 26 (1:30pm), Thailand on September 28 (11:00am) and Jordan on September 30 (5:30pm) in the preliminary round. [Asian Games LIVE]
