The undefeated University of California - UC Irvine Anteaters (8-0) overwhelmed the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters-Pilipinas (2-6), 115-61, to sweep the 2023 William Jones Cup on Sunday, August 20, at the Taipei Heping Basketball Gymnasium in Taipei City, Taiwan. [VIDEO]
The NCAA Division I team, the Anteaters, pulled away early in the game and outscored the E-Painters 26-6 at the end of the first quarter, and never looked back. RoS import Nick Evans was slapped with a technical foul and was thrown out of the game with 4:56 left in the first quarter.
Five Americans finished with double digits, with Derin Saran leading the way with a huge double-double of 23 points, 19 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block. Emilis Butkus had a solid game, scoring 18 points (3/5 from 3-point range), along with 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 blocks, while Devin Tillis added a near double-double of 16 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals.
The Anteaters won all 8 of their games to secure the Jones Cup 2023 title, while the Philippines' representative, Rain or Shine, managed to win only 2 out of 8 games and finished 7th in the standings. Meanwhile, the silver medal will be contested by Chinese Taipei A (6-1) and South Korea's Anyang KGC (6-1) later at 7:15pm. [LIVE]
