Gilas Pilipinas Women (1-2) suffered their second loss in the 2023 William Jones Cup campaign against the hosts Chinese Taipei Women's National Basketball Team B (1-2), 94-83 on Monday, August 7, 2023 at the Taipei Heping Basketball Gymnasium in Taipei City in Taiwan. [VIDEO]
Ting Tai led Taipei-B with 19 points including 5-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc along with 7 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals for their first victory in the tournament. Chin Hua Yu scored 15 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist and a steal while Hui Ju Liu added 14 points, 3 rebounds and 5 assists.
Afril Bernardino paced Gilas in the losing effort with game-high 22 points on 10-of-17 shooting along with 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal and a block. Jack Animam had a near double-double performance of 18 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 block while Janine Pontejos added 11 points (3/6 3pts) to go with 1 rebound, 4 assists and a steal.
Following a 3-year break due to COVID-19 pandemic, the R. William Jones Cup, an international basketball tournament hosted by the Chinese Taipei Basketball Association since 1977, is making its return. The 42nd William Jones Cup is scheduled to take place at Taipei Heping Basketball Gymnasium in Taipei City from August 5 to 9 for the women's event, while the men's event will start from August 12 to 20, 2023. The Patrick Aquino-mentored Gilas Women suffered its third loss of the tournament, having only won against Iran. They are set to play their final game on August 9 against the undefeated Chanson V-Magic of Japan (3-0).
