The reigning UAAP and WUBS champions Ateneo Blue Eagles Men's Basketball Team dominated the 2022 men's University Basketball League Australia (UBL) champions Sydney University Basketball Club, 88-50 in Day 1 of the 2023 World University Basketball Series (WUBS) on Friday, August 11 at the Yoyogi National Stadium in Tokyo, Japan. The Tab Baldwin-mentored Blue Eagles opened their WUBS title defense on a winning note in the 3-day knockout tournament. Ateneo advances to the knockout semifinal game (SEMIS UPDATE: Hakuoh def. Ateneo, 73-58) against Japan's Hakuoh University Soldiers, while Sydney Uni will be relegated to the classification match against Perbanas Institute of Indonesia.

In the other games of Day 1, National Chengchi University of Chinese Taipei escaped past Japan’s Tokai University, 81-73, while the US NCAA Division I team, Radford University Highlanders, overwhelmed Korea University with a score of 100-63.
