Gilas Pilipinas Youth U16 (1-0) defeated Kuwait U16 national team (0-2), 82-45 in the preliminary round of Group C at the 2022 FIBA U16 Asian Championship early Tuesday morning (Manila time) at the Al Gharafa Sports Club Multi-Purpose Hall in Doha, Qatar.

6'6" Zain Mahmood led Gilas in scoring with game-high 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting (6/8 ft) along with 5 rebounds, 2 steals and a block in 24 minutes of play. Point guard Jared Bahay with a solid all-around game of 12 points (4/8 fg, 2/4 3pt, 2/4 ft), 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals while Kristian Porter added 10 points on perfect 4-of-4 shooting (2/2 2pt, 2/2 3pt), 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal and a block.

Gilas shot 26/69 (37%) from the field including 7-of-32 shooting from downtown and went 23-of-34 from the free throw line. Philippines out-rebounded Kuwait 48-40, PHL had more assists 23-12, steals 17-14, and blocks 4-0.
