World Cup-bound Gilas Pilipinas Youth suffered a huge 87-59 defeat to fellow World Cup-bound team, China, in the bronze medal match of the 2023 FIBA U16 Asian Championship on Sunday, September 24 at the Al-Gharafa Sports Club Multi-Purpose Hall in Doha, Qatar. [VIDEO]
6'8" Boyuan Zhand led the Chinese team with a tournament-high 34 points, shooting 12-of-17 from the field, including 7-of-9 from beyond the arc to go along with 7 rebounds, and a block in 29 minutes of play. 7'0" Sinan Huan finished with a double-double of 14 points (6/7fg, 2/3ft), 11 rebounds, 4 assists, and a game-high 5 blocks while 6'2" Ziheng Wang added 12 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.
Joaquin Gabriel Ludovice led Gilas in a losing effort with 15 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal. Kiefer Louie Alas added 13 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 4 steals, and a block while Irus Chua had 10 points.
Gilas shot 31% from the field (22/70fg), including 7-of-22 shooting from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, China had 33 out of 67 field goals and made 11 out of 26 attempts from three-point range. CHN outrebounded PHL, 54-31 and also had more assists with 22 compared to Gilas' 14.
Australia, New Zealand, China, and the Josh Reyes-mentored Gilas Pilipinas Youth — have secured spots in the 2024 FIBA Under-17 Basketball World Cup, scheduled to take place in Turkey from June 29 to July 7, 2024.
