World No. 10 Italy overcame a slow start and escaped past the No. 41 Angola, 81-67 in Group A preliminary round of the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup on Friday, August 25 in the Philippine Arena in Bulacan, Philippines.

Leading by only 4 points at the end of the 3rd quarter, the Italians outscored Angola 20-10 in the final period to secure their first win. Utah Jazz forward Simone Fontecchio led Italy with 19 points (8/14fg, 1/6 3pts, 2/2ft) to go along with 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal and a block in 27 minutes of play.
Stefano Tonut had a solid performance of 18 points (5/8fg, 8/8ft), with 1 rebound, and 2 assists while Giampaolo Ricci added 12 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist and a steal.
