Gilas Pilipinas Men defeated the Cambodian team, which had multiple naturalized players, with a score of 80-69, reclaiming the gold medal in the Men's Basketball 5x5 event at the 2023 SEA Games on Tuesday, May 16 at the Morodok Techno National Stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. [REPLAY VIDEO]
Naturalized Filipino Justin Brownlee led the Gilas team with 23 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the field, including 3-of-7 from beyond the arc, and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. He also contributed 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block in 35 minutes of play.
Chris Newsome had a solid output of 16 points (7-of-12 FG), along with 2 rebounds and 4 assists while Marcio Lassiter added 10 points (4/7fg, 2/3 3pts), 5 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals.
Brandon Peterson paced the Cambodia's seven-man rotation in the losing effort with a double-double of 18 points, 14 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal while Darrin Dorsey finished with 17 points (4/14fg, 3/10fg, 6/6ft), 2 rebounds and 4 assists while Dwayne Morgan and Sayeed Pridgett added 13 points apiece.
The Chot Reyes-mentored Gilas shot 32 out of 67 from the field, including 7-of-21 shooting from beyond the arc (CAM - 26/62FG, 4/19 3pts), and Gilas went 9-of-15 from the free throw line (CAM - 13/18ft). Both teams had 12 turnovers. Gilas outrebounded Cambodia, 40-36, and had more assists, 14-13.
“Win or lose, this was my last Southeast Asian Games, I promised I’ll never coach here in the SEA Games anymore. At least I was able to go out with a gold medal.” said Chot Reyes.
Gilas Pilipinas will be back in action from August 25 to September 10 for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup. The Philippines (World #40, Asia #8) is in Group A along with Angola (World #41, Africa #4), Dominican Republic (World #23, Americas #7), and Italy (World #10, Europe #7).
