UP def. Ateneo, 84-83, snaps Blue Eagles 39-game winning streak (UAAP | May 1, 2022)

University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons (12-2) defeated the Ateneo Blue Eagles (13-1), 84-83 in the UAAP Season 84 men's basketball tournament on Sunday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

The Fighting Maroons spoil Ateneo's bid for an elimination sweep and an outright finals berth. UP also halts the 39-game winning streak of the Blue Eagles.

Maodo Diouf led UP with a double-double performance of 18 points on 6-of-7 shooting along with 16 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal and a block in 28 minutes of play. Carl Tamayo with a solid game of 16 points (6/13 FG, 3/3 FT), 4 rebounds and 1 steal while James Spencer finished with 12 points (4/9 FG, 3/7 3PT), 6 rebounds and 3 assists.

The Final Four will begin on Wednesday, May 4, with the first game at 2:00pm UP vs. DLSU while Ateneo will face FEU at 6:00pm. Top-seeded Ateneo and #2 seed UP with a twice-to-beat advantage.
