Japan def. Chinese Taipei, 76-71 (VIDEO) February 26 | FIBA World Cup 2023 Asian Qualifiers

Hosts Japan (1-2) defeated Chinese Taipei (0-2), 76-71 to claim their first win in Group B of the FIBA World Cup 2023 Asian Qualifiers on Saturday at the Okinawa Arena in Okinawa, Japan.

Guard Yudai Nishida led the Japanese in scoring with game-high 27 points on 9-of-13 shooting including two 3-pointers and perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line along with 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks. Japan's naturalized center Luke Evans had a solid double-double performance of 17 points (6/11 FG, 1/3 3PT, 4/8 FT), 12 rebounds and 4 assists. Takuma Sato and Yuki Togashi added 9 points and 8 points, respectively.

Filipino-Japanese center Matthew Aquino, son of PBA great Marlou Aquino, finished with 2 points (0/1 FG, 0/1 3PT, 2/2 FT) and 1 rebound with 3 personal fouls and 1 turnover in 4 minutes of play in his Akatsuki Five debut.

Kuei-Yu Chou paced Chinese Taipei with 21 points (8/17 FG, 4/7 3PT), 5 rebounds and 3 assists while newly naturalized Taiwanese 6'11" William Artino had 15 points (7/13 FG, 0/2 3PT, 1/3 FT), game-high 18 rebounds, 5 assists and 1 steal in 30 minutes of play.

The Japanese will face Australia (1-0) tomorrow, Sunday, February 27 at 5:30pm while the Taiwanese will play the Boomers on Monday, February 28 at 2:30pm.
