World #12 Czech Republic defeated Asian basketball powerhouse Iran (world #23), 84-78 in the group phase (Group A) in the opening day of the Men's Basketball 2020 Tokyo Olympics on Sunday at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

The Iranian outscored the Czechs 32-17 in the fourth quarter, but ultimately falling short.

Center Patrik Auda led the charge for the Czechs with 16 points (12/23fg, 2/2 3pt) and 6 rebounds while Blake Schilb added 14 points (6/10 fg, 2/5 3pts) along with 5 assists and 4 rebounds. Behnam Yakhchali with a huge game for Iran with 23 points, 4 assists and 3 steals. Mohammad Jamshidi finished with 16 points (7/11 fg) along with 8 assists and 1 steal while veteran Iranian star center Hamed Haddadi with a double-double of 15 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 1 block.
